How is it between us? Relational ethics and transcendence
Abstract
enIn this article, I engage the recent debate on transcendence/the transcendental within the anthropology of ethics with the claim that ‘How is it between us?’ is the most fundamental of all ethical questions. In doing so, I contrast relational ethics with ordinary ethics to show that ethics begins with a demand that emerges from a situation within which one finds oneself with others; a demand that pulls one out of oneself to respond in a modality of concern and care for the between where we dwell together. This attuned response is both an ethical and a political one; a response that opens possibilities for being-together-otherwise. Such possibilities, I argue throughout, can only begin with a relational ethics. I illustrate this with an ethnographic example from harm reduction practice and anti-drug war political activity in both New York City and Vancouver, Canada.

Cet article prend part au récent débat sur la transcendance/le transcendantal en anthropologie de l’éthique, avançant que « Comment cela se passe-t-il entre nous ? » constitue la plus fondamentale de toutes les questions éthiques. L'auteur distingue ainsi éthique relationnelle et éthique ordinaire, afin de montrer que l’éthique commence par une demande émergeant d'une situation dans laquelle l'individu prend conscience des autres individus qui l'entourent; une demande qui tire l'individu hors de lui-même pour réagir dans une modalité d'intérêt et de considération pour l’« entre-nous ». À la fois éthique et politique, cette réaction consciente ouvre la voie à des possibilités pour l’« être-ensemble-autrement ». Tout au long de l'article, l'auteur avance que ces possibilités ne peuvent commencer qu'avec une éthique relationnelle. Il illustre son propos avec l'exemple ethnographique des politiques de réduction des risques et de lutte contre les drogues à New York et à Vancouver (Canada).
